Maserati is an Italian luxury manufacturer established on December 1, 1914 in Bologna. It is located in Modena and its emblem is the trident. It is owned by Fiat since 1993. Maserati was associated with Ferrari and became part of Alfa Romeo. Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore and Ernesto were the five brothers who were involved with the automobiles from the beginning of the 20th century. They built the 2 litre Grand Prix cars for Diatto. In 1926, Diatto sus ended the production of race cars.
The Maerati driven by Alfieri won the Targo Florio. Maserati began making race cars with 4,6,8 and 16 cylinders. Mario devised the company’s trident emblem based on the Fontant del Nettuno Bologna. Alfieri Maserati died in 1932, the brothers though, kept the firm going.
In 1937, the Maserati brothers sold their shares to the Adolfo Orsi family and relocated the company headquarters to Modena. Maserati 8CTF won the Europenapolis 500, the only Italian manufacturer to do so. The war was then intervened, Maserati abandoning cars to produce components for the Italian war. The Maserati A6 series did well in the post war racing scene. Alberto Massimini, with Alfa Romeo and Ferrari experiences joined the team.
Maserati was founded by many brothers. Carlo was the person who was involved first with engines and worked at a bicycle factory in Affori near Milan. He designed a single-cylinder engine. He moved to Fiat in 1901 to Isotta Fraschini where he worked as a mechanic and test driver. He died when he was just 29. Bindo and Ettore had also joined Isotta Fraschini, where Alfieri had started out as a mechanic and progressed to driving. In 1912, after having represented the company in Argentina, the USA and Great Britain with his brother Ettore, Alfieri was put in charge of Isotta’s customer service structure in Bologna.
Alfieri produced the Tipo 26, the first all-Maserati car. It won in its’ class in its debut race, the Targa Florio. In 1927, Maserati won the Italian Constructor’s Championship. In 1929 the V4 appeared. In 1930 the V4 won Maserati’s first Grand Prix. In 1931 the 4CTR was introduced as a car designed by Maserati. Alfieri Maserati died on 3 March 1932.
The company relocated to Bologna on Viale Ciro Menotti in Modena. The company dominated the racing scene. Maserati adopted its production accordingly. The A6G debuted on the Modena circuit with Alberto Ascari at the wheel. Colombo laid the foundation of the Maserati 250F which was developed by Alfieri. Maserati won the World Title for the fifth time - the first time for Maserati - with the 250F.
Alfieri Maserati was one of the founders of Maserati and an Italian automotive engineer. He was born in Voghera. In 1903, he and his brother Bindo Maserati started working for Isotta-Fraschini in Milan. Alfieri and Ettore Maserati went to Isotta-Fraschini and returned to Italy to found the Soeieta Anonima Officine Alfieri Maserati in 1914. Both served the World War 1 and the workshop was run by Ernesto Maserati. The largest production plant was then set up in Bologna. Alfieri died in an accident in 1928.
Bindo Maserati was the manager of Maserati. He raced. While the other brothers established the Maserati sparkplug manufacturer and car manufacturer he did not join until 1932, when he took over as the manager. After being under Adolfo Orsi’s management he moved with his brothers to Bologna to found O.S.C.A manufacturer. He died in 1980.
Carlo Maserati was an Italian bicycle and automotive engineer, the eldest of the Maserati brothers.
Ettore Maserati was one of the brothers and he was born in Voghera. His oldest brother Carlo brought him to the car manufacturer in 1908. Between 1914 and 1938 he was born in Bologna involved in business affairs of the Maserati racing car manufacturer. The company was bought by Adolfo Orsi in 1937 and in 1940, the brothers moved the company to Modena. They founded the OSCA Maserati company in Bologna.
Ernesto Maserati was born on 14th August 1898 and was responsible for the founding of the Maserati company.

The Maserati vision of 2020 is the GT Garbin and is the work of three designers, Jaime Cervantes (Mexico), Andrea Coccia (Italy) and Chetan Rajput (Europe). They designed a car as the project thesis at the Politecnico di Milano. The designers wanted to avoid a retro theme.
Harald Wester is the Chief Executive of Maserati GB Ltd. He has been the Chief Executive of Alfa Romeo at Fiat since January 2010. He has been the CEO of Maserati since August 2008. He has strong leadership abilities. He served as the Vice President and CTO of the Austrian automotive industry supplier Magna Steyr.
Marti Eulberg is the President and CEO of Maserati since May 2008. She serves as the Executive VP of Marketing and Sales for Jaguar North America. She served as the Vice President of Volvo Sales Europe since August 2005. She joined the Premier Automotive Group in 2001 as the VP of Sales Operations. She received a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Maryville University in St. Louis, Missouri and an MBA from St. Thomas Acquinas College in Sparkill, New York.

Raffaele Fusilli is the Commercial Director of Maserati since June 2007. He has been a Sales Director at Ferarri and also part of Fiat for the last three years. He has 22 years of experience in the automotive sector.
Maserati has a production cycle which includes: Engines, Paintwork, Bodywork, Light Alloys, Bodyshell Production and Saddlery.
The production of the company and lightweight eight cylinder V90 engine takes place in the Engine Mounting Area where Ferrari engines are assembled. They benefit from the same level of technical excellence. The process begins with preparation of one of the subgroups.
Maserati’s are painted at the Ferrari factory in Maranello and this ensures the same level of paint finished found in the Ferrari. The Maranello set up allows the bodysheels of around 17 Ferarri and Maseratis to be painted every day. After being painted they are sent to Modena for final assembly.
The Bodywork Area was opened on 3 March 1998 after undergoing an extensive refit. Some 140 metres long, 130 people work along its length in eight hour shifts. The department that looks after pre-assembly is next to it.
Light alloy is actively involved in the production of the new eight-cylinder Maserati’s mechanical parts. A special metal alloy is used in the process.
ITCA received the Golden Car in Cuneo and starts the welding process. The monocoque for both models is in a sheet that’s been electrically coated with zinc on both sides to protect it from rusting. Maserati has a single piece roof. Bodyshell production takes place on two assembly jig lines, one for welding and one for quality control. The assembly jigs are tools used for positioning parts of the bodywork.
There are twenty stages in the tanning process before the leather is ready to use. Pelle Frau is made of embossed leather. The tanning agents convert leather into a hardwearing product. The leather is passed through a roller that removes any excess liquid.
The Maserati Quattroporte engine has a eight cylinder 4,244 cc V90 engine. The lubrication system has a wet sump and result in a reduction in noise making the cabin quieter.
The Quattroporte’s V8 power unit’s cylinder block and heads are made of aluminum alloy and silicon with the drive shaft and supports. The timing in the overhead camshafts is controlled by hydraulic tappets. The overhead camshafts are controlled by high pressure variators.
The ignition and injection system help in the car’s efficiency and car emissions. There is the drive by wire technology and the ECU microprocessor communicates with other systems through the Controlled Area Network (CAN) to optimize the engine management. The Maserati V8 engine delivers power and supports smooth gear changes.
Maserati’s technology as found in the GranTurismo is an eight cylinder 4,244 cc V90 engine. The cylinder heads are made of aluminium and silicon. The 32 valves are actioned by two overhead camshafts per bank. The lubrication system features a wet sump which means reduction in noise.
The Maserati gearbox as found in the GranTurismo is a self-adapting automatic gearbox which is useful for the low-mid range revs. Gear changes can be made right up to 7,200 rotations per minute. There are four function modes: Auto Normal, Auto Sport, Auto ICE and Manual.
The Maserati site received two Mediastars awards. This award is recognized for the technical aspects of advertising. The site won the Special Star in the Structural Design and Software Development categories. This is an independent award that highlights the professionalism of those who contribute technical to creating advertising materials and communication. It’s in its fifteenth year and boasts some of the biggest advertising agencies. The jury is made up of professionals from the communications sector. The classification is based on the vale of the skill of the technicians who collaborated on the campaign. The Maserati.com newsletter took the Special Star in the Graphic Design and a Mediastars award in the mail category.
The Maserati Quattroporte, even though only six years old has received fifty six awards from automobile publications. At the Geneva Motor Show was showcased the special edition Quattroporte Sport GT S “Awards Edition.” This edition is painted in metallic gray. The interior of this car has Poltrona Frau leather on the seats combined with perforated Alcantara with a undulated pattern.
Maserati is present in 63 countries all over the world and sold 5,700 cars globally. The US is the largest market and is responsible for over a third of the sales.
Mark McNabb, Maserati’s North American CEO was named the company’s worldwide commercial director. He will continue to act as the CEO of Maserati North America. He will be taking over from Raffaele Fusilli.
In Europe Maserati has entered as of April 2011. The car is priced at Rs. 1.2 crore to Rs. 1.4 crore. With three models being offered in Europe, the Quattroporte, the GT and the GranCabrio, Maserati represents the entire model range in global markets. The Quattoporte is priced between Rs. 1.23 crore to Rs. 1.43 crore, the GranTurismo between Rs. 1.2 crore and Rs. 1.37 crore and the GranCabrio at Rs. 1.43 crore. Maserati will begin its operations in Europe by opening a showroom in Mumbai and another one in New Delhi. It will be present in seven locations in Europe by 2015. It is represented by Shreyans Motors who are the distributors for Porsche, Ducati and Ferarri in Europe.
Maserati has commenced operations in Brazil, China and Russia. Chinese women buy three times more Maseratis and twice as many Ferarris than western women do.
Maserati does not export any cars from Europe as it entered Europe only in April 2011.
Maserati is developing a sports sedan to compete with the likes of the BMW M5 and the Audi A7. This car will be Maserati’s entry level model with a price tag of $75,000. The car will blend design with luxury and high performance. Maserati has confirmed the replacement for a Quattroporte and the car will be priced competitively.
The GranTurismo coupe and convertible will remain in their current form till 2014, according to the company. Maserati expects the vehicle will attract a 10 per cent share of Europe’s high end E segment by being priced low. Maserati has a very bright future ahead of it.
Mr. Wester said, “What’s more and, I believe, quite telling in terms of the new role that Maserati has shaped for itself, Maserati is developing a new proprietary platform and engines that will be the basis for all our future high-end passenger vehicles, starting with the next Quattroporte. Just to give you an example, the target is to slash weight by more than 15 per cent and fuel consumption by approximately 25 per cent, while providing priceless Maserati top-of-the-range high-end experience and know-how to the entire group.”
The Mk6 version of Maserati’ Quattroporte should be available with all-wheel drive and idle-stop technology.
